She’s one young girl with one great passion … and one giant career ahead of her.

11-year-old piano prodigy, Umi Garrett, has been skyrocketing into superstardom since her appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2009. Receiving requests to perform worldwide and appearing regularly with symphony orchestras around the world, she’s thrilling audiences with her unparalleled performances and youthful, enthusiastic charm. Umi’s highlights range from her orchestral debut with the Desert Symphony in California to her debut in Asia with the Wuhan Symphony Orchestra. Performing at festivals in Italy, Australia and Japan, she was recently invited to perform a solo recital for the Japan Times in Tokyo and at Carnegie (Weill) Hall.

Winner of first prize at the Southwestern Youth Music Festival, the J.S. Bach Competition in Los Angeles for two consecutive years and the Bradshaw & Buono International Piano Competition in New York, Umi Garrett is on a flight to legendary status and her ride doesn’t seem to be stopping anytime soon.

With a “National Anthem of Rock and Roll” in their pockets, The Diamonds are more than seasoned performers. They are classic rock ’n’ roll.

The original quartet rose to prominence in the 1950s and early 1960s with 16 Billboard hits including “The Stroll” and the instant, million-selling hit “Little Darlin’” which has sold approximately 20 million copies to date. The Diamonds have learned that the durability of classic rock and roll music is as much about the future as it is about the past. The newest quartet members, playing saxophone and trombone joined with piano and drums, continue to expand their audience by performing in a variety of venues and touring Europe, South America, and Asia.

Three gold records… thirty-three appearances on American Bandstand… inductions into the Doo-Wop Hall of Fame and Vocal Group Hall of Fame…

With JoAnn Falletta as the Musical Director and sponsored by The Camp Foundation, the Virginia Symphony has been one of our most popular shows for many years. This season’s concert offers something special-a Holiday show to start your celebration on a high note. Christmas is a busy time for the Symphony so we are grateful they could find a spot for us. The program will incorporate many of the features of one of the Orchestra’s most popular offerings: The Holiday Pops. Fa-a-la-la-la-la!

Saturday, March 29, 2014 – 7:30 PM

The Walter Noona Trio with Walter at the piano, Greg Hanson at the electric guitar, and Ralph Copley, the percussionist will return by popular demand. They are from the Tidewater area. Walter teaches at Norfolk Academy and writes piano teaching materials and lectures with his talented wife, Carol. Greg is a teacher and you can see Ralph performing with The Tidewater Winds. Besides playing commercially, they have given numerous concert performances throughout the states and often appear as guests with the Virginia Pops Symphony. While we don’t know exactly what they will do for us this season, Walter always comes up with an upbeat jazzy program that delights our membership.

Hal Linden spices up the stage with a dose of nostalgia and a dash of legendary star quality.

With a 65-year career in the entertainment business, Hal Linden is best known for his portrayal of the police precinct captain in the hit television series, Barney Miller, for which he earned multiple Golden Globe and Emmy nominations. In 1957, he made his Broadway debut in the musical Bells Are Ringing opposite Judy Holliday and has continued to perform in more than 20 Broadway and off-Broadway productions including Pajama Game, A Christmas Carol, Chicago and Cabaret. In 1971, he won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical for his role in The Rothschilds.

Backed by a 7-piece band, Linden performs some of America’s greatest songs and Broadway hits. You will get decades worth of knowledge and talent and an entire concert filled with an assortment of poise, entertainment and timeless melodies.

The popular Glenn Miller disappeared on December 15, 1944 during a flight over the English Channel, but neither his orchestra nor his sound have ever disappeared from the American Music scene, nor from the hearts of several generations of fans. Over 60 years since this sound was first embraced, it is the most sought after band in the world for concerts and dance engagements. The current Glenn Miller Orchestra was formed in 1956 by the Miller Estate which remains in control. Sit back and enjoy favorites such as In The Mood, A String of Pearls, Tuxedo Junction, and many more.
